title: Find members for assignments | Lightfield
description: Find a workspace member ID and use it to assign a task or select sequence reviewers.
---

Use member IDs when assigning [tasks](/help/tasks/index.md) or choosing sequence reviewers. A member is a person in your workspace; an external contact uses a contact ID instead. Invite people and change their roles through [Members settings](/help/settings/members/index.md).

## Find the member

With `members:read`, call [List members](/api/resources/member/methods/list/index.md):

Terminal window

```
curl "https://api.lightfield.app/v1/members?limit=20&offset=0" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $LIGHTFIELD_API_KEY" \
  -H "Lightfield-Version: 2026-03-01"
```

Find the intended person using `data[].fields.$email.value`; names alone can be ambiguous. Save their `id`, which starts with `mem_`. Read every page using the returned `totalCount` and the [pagination procedure](/using-the-api/list-endpoints/#pagination/index.md).

## Verify the ID before assigning work

Use [Retrieve a member](/api/resources/member/methods/retrieve/index.md) to confirm the email and name:

Terminal window

```
curl "https://api.lightfield.app/v1/members/$MEMBER_ID" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $LIGHTFIELD_API_KEY" \
  -H "Lightfield-Version: 2026-03-01"
```

Pass that ID as `relationships.$assignedTo` when [creating a task](/using-the-api/manage-records/#create-a-record/index.md), or in `reviewers` when [creating a sequence](/using-the-api/sequences/#create-a-sequence/index.md). Those writes require their own scopes; `members:read` only permits the lookup.

If retrieval returns 404, confirm that the key and member belong to the same workspace. Re-list members before replacing a stale ID. Do not substitute a `con_` contact ID or an email address in an ID field.
