title: Sequences | Lightfield
description: Enroll contacts in a multi-touch email and LinkedIn cadence. Lightfield writes each message, sends on a schedule, and stops when they reply.
---

Sequences are available to customers on the Pro plan.

A sequence is a per-contact outreach cadence. You enroll a contact, Lightfield sends a series of emails and LinkedIn messages over days or weeks, and that contact is removed as soon as they reply.

You don’t build this in a node editor. Describe the cadence in chat and the agent programs it for you: the audience, the value proposition, the steps, and who sends.

## Sequences vs automations

Use a sequence when you want a timed outreach cadence for a person. Use an [automation](/automations/overview/index.md) when you want a process to run on a schedule or a CRM event.

| | Sequence | Automation |
| ----------------- | --------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Starts when | You enroll a contact | A trigger fires (schedule, record change, webhook) |
| Unit of work | One enrollment per contact | One run per event |
| Email | Sends, or parks in For review | Drafts only; cannot auto-send |
| In-flight changes | Edits apply to enrolled contacts at their next step | Running runs stay on the version they started |

A sequence has no event trigger. Cadence over time comes from waits between steps and the send window, not from re-firing when a record changes.

## How a sequence runs

1. **Draft** with the agent in chat.
2. **Test run** against one contact. Messages are composed as drafts; nothing is sent.
3. **Publish**, then **Activate**. The first publish leaves the sequence paused.
4. **Enroll** contacts. Each contact moves through the steps on their own.
5. **A reply stops outreach.** An inbound email or LinkedIn message, including an out-of-office auto-reply, removes that contact from every live sequence.

You can enroll contacts while a sequence is paused. Sending starts when you activate or resume it.

## Steps

A **step** is a touch: an email, a LinkedIn invite, or a LinkedIn DM. Waits sit between steps and are not counted as steps.

Each send step is either **Review manually** (the default: compose, then park in [For review](/automations/how-for-review-works/index.md)) or **Send automatically**.

For how to create, test, and enroll, see [Building sequences](/sequences/building-sequences/index.md).
